Peatlands and Wetlands in a Changing Climate Workshop Brings Together Researchers from Ireland, Canada, and the U.S.

From November 27-28, 2025, researchers gathered at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Ontario for a two-day workshop on peatlands and wetlands, Peatlands and Wetlands in a Changing Climate: Monitoring and Modeling Across Canada, the U.S., and Ireland. Organized by members of the Solutionscapes Wetland Team in collaboration with Teagasc, the workshop examined how wetland and peatland science can inform climate-smart land management in agricultural settings.

Discussions focused on peatland and wetland restoration as nature-based solutions, spanning themes of hydrology, greenhouse gas dynamics, and designing and scaling restoration efforts across landscapes. Participants shared insights from field studies, modelling approaches, and geospatial tools used to support mapping and restoration planning. Shared challenges across regions underscored the value of international exchange in addressing wetland and peatland management.

The workshop brought together research across multiple institutions. A detailed overview of the event is available through the University of Waterloo’s Water Institute.
