Public lecture by Dr. Nandita Basu highlights integrated pathways to water, food, and energy sustainability
Dr. Nandita Basu was invited to give a public distinguished lecture at the University of Victoria, in honour of her Distinguished Women Scholars Award, sharing her pioneering work on SOLUTIONSCAPES, a systems‑based approach to addressing interconnected challenges across food production, water quality, energy systems, and climate resilience.
In her talk, Dr. Basu emphasized that while many effective tools already exist, such as sustainable farming practices, wetland restoration, and circular waste management, their true potential emerges only when they are implemented in coordinated, landscape‑scale ways that reflect the complexity of real‑world ecosystems..
Her insights underscored how fragmented environmental interventions can unintentionally create trade‑offs, shifting challenges from one sector to another. Through the SOLUTIONSCAPES framework, Dr. Basu illustrates how integrating ecological, social, and economic strategies can produce more resilient and equitable outcomes for both communities and the environment.
The Distinguished Women Scholars Award is an honour established by the university’s Vice‑President Academic and Provost to recognize exceptional research achievements by women scholars and provide opportunities for them to inspire the broader university community.
Reflecting on her team’s integrative research approach, Dr. Basu explained that their work bridges nutrient management, water quality, energy systems, and climate policy. By exploring how these systems interact, she noted, researchers can uncover more efficient and sustainable pathways for managing our most vital resources, a perspective foundational to the SOLUTIONSCAPES approach.
Through this award and lecture, the University of Victoria highlights Dr. Basu’s leadership in advancing holistic, equitable, and resilient environmental solutions, work that continues to shape global conversations on water sustainability and climate futures.
