Dr. Gordon McNicol Demonstrates New Model of Wetland Methane Emissions at 2025 SIAM Annual Meeting
From July 28 - August 1, 2025 the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Annual Meeting was held in Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Gordon McNicol, Postdoctoral Fellow in Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo and member of the Solutionscapes Wetland Team, delivered a presentation titled Modelling Environmental Drivers of Wetland Methane Emissions, co-authored with Anita T. Layton and Nandita B. Basu.
The presentation outlined a mechanistic model that captures how hydrologic and temperature changes influence methane fluxes in wetlands. Dr. McNicol applied mathematical modeling to demonstrate how climate and water management shape greenhouse gas emissions. His research provides information for restoration approaches.
The SIAM Annual Meeting convenes researchers and industry professionals to share advances in applied mathematics, computation, and modeling across science and engineering.
