Can Wetland Restoration Overcome Legacy Nitrogen? Dr. Nandita Basu Presents at Goldschmidt 2025
From July 6-11, 2025, the Goldschmidt Conference was held in Prague, Czech Republic, hosted by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry. Dr. Nandita Basu, Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Waterloo and Principal Investigator of the Solutionscapes Project, participated in the event.
Dr. Basu delivered a presentation titled Legacy Nitrogen Meet Wetland Restoration: Solvable Problem or Fool’s Paradise?
Co-authored with Dr. Kimberly Van Meter, Assistant Professor at Penn State University and member of the Solutionscapes Wetland Team, the talk examined how long-term nitrogen accumulation in landscapes complicates wetland restoration efforts. Dr. Basu highlighted the scientific and management challenges of reducing nutrient pollution when legacy nitrogen persists in soils and groundwater, and explored whether restoration strategies can meaningfully overcome these effects.
As the largest international conference dedicated to geochemistry, Goldschmidt brings together researchers across disciplines to share advances in earth, planetary, and environmental sciences that shape our planet and its ecosystems.
